Opening of Legal Year 2022 on 21.01.2022 at Kota Kinabalu

Dear Members,

Please find attached the speech delivered by the President of the Advocates Association of Sarawak, Mr. Antonio Sim at the Opening of Legal Year 2022 held at the High Court of Sabah and Sarawak at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah on 21.02.2022.

The President has addressed the following issues and/or matters:-

  1. That a Judge with Bornean judicial experience to sit on the appellate panel hearing appeals which originate from Sabah and Sarawak.
  2. The proposed amendment of S.68(1)(a) Courts of Judicature Act 1964 for threshold value to be increased from RM250,000.00 to RM1 million is rejected by AAS;
  3. Independence of Judiciary;
  4. Appellate cases to be heard via video-conferencing; and
  5. Practice directions to be issued in English language for Sabah and Sarawak.

The Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak had announced during the Opening of Legal Year Gala Dinner that the Opening Legal Year 2023 will be held in Miri.
